Johannesburg and Cape Town ask the same tap question in different languages

Two Cities, Two Tap Rules

Gautrain can charge your own contactless bank card directly; Cape Town's MyCiTi asks each passenger to buy and load a separate myconnect card.

South Africa has no single national visitor tap. Two of its most useful urban systems demonstrate the difference clearly. Gautrain links Johannesburg, Pretoria and OR Tambo Airport with open contactless access, while MyCiTi uses a stored-value card that belongs to its own Cape Town network.

The quick answer On Gautrain trains and buses, use your own eligible contactless bank card or a loaded Gautrain Card, then tap the same card in and out. On MyCiTi, buy the new myconnect card for R40, load Mover value or a pass and tap that card at both ends. A bank card that works at Gautrain is not a substitute for myconnect.

Gautrain treats one card as one journey record

The same Gautrain Card or contactless bank card must tag into and out of stations, buses and parking for the system to calculate the journey and applicable discounts. Switching from plastic to a mobile wallet mid-trip can create a second payment identity even when both represent the same bank account.

The Gautrain alternative carries a minimum balance

A Gautrain Card remains available and can be reloaded. Official guidance currently requires at least R38 of value to access train or bus services. A ticket vending machine accepts cash and bank cards, while direct contactless travel avoids buying the dedicated card for a short visit.

MyCiTi changed its card in February 2026

The improved myconnect card costs R40, has no PIN or expiry date and is sold at station kiosks and participating retailers. Load Mover points for distance-based travel or a 1-, 3- or 7-day pass when that better matches the itinerary.

A Cape Town bus does not sell change on board

MyCiTi is cashless at the bus door. Each passenger needs a card, except qualifying young children, and a missing tap-out can produce a penalty. Load enough value before the journey and check the balance at a validator, station information terminal or kiosk.

City, operator, product, then tap

Other South African trains, buses and minibus taxis have their own payment practices. Do not turn the Gautrain or MyCiTi rule into a national assumption. Identify the local operator first, then buy or tap the product it actually accepts.
