Tipping in the Philippines is neither a universal percentage nor a complete non-event. The most useful clue is printed on the receipt. Hotels, restaurants and similar establishments may add a service charge, and Philippine labour rules require collected service charges to be distributed fully and equally among covered employees, excluding managers.

A service charge and a direct tip are not the same thing
Republic Act No. 11360 requires service charges collected by hotels, restaurants and similar businesses to be distributed completely and equally among covered workers except managerial employees. Revised 2024 rules expanded the covered group to include eligible workers supplied through contractors. A direct cash tip is a separate personal gesture.
Small transport does not need percentage arithmetic
For metered taxis and ride-hailing, paying the fare or rounding a small amount is normal. For a negotiated tricycle ride, agree the fare before leaving and pay that amount; a tip can follow unusual help, waiting or luggage rather than becoming part of every short trip.
Guides and boat crews are judged by the day
A local guide who solves weather problems, a dive crew that handles equipment carefully or a boat team that creates an excellent day can reasonably receive a group tip. Decide from service, trip length and group size. Hand it over clearly rather than hiding it inside an uncertain fare.
Hotels reward help, not every doorway
Bell staff, housekeeping and drivers may receive modest tips when they have done something useful or sustained good work over several days. Keep small notes available if you want to tip directly. A warm thank-you without cash remains entirely acceptable for routine service.
Do not tip inside an expensive conversion
On a card terminal, check the amount after adding any gratuity and keep the transaction in Philippine pesos. A home-currency offer can quietly add a poor exchange rate to an otherwise thoughtful gesture. The tip should be the extra you chose, not the conversion you missed.
