For visits beginning on or after 1 July 2026, Malta's eco-contribution is EUR 1.50 per night for each guest who is 18 or older at the start of the visit. The maximum is EUR 22.50 per person.

The start date chooses the new rate
The EUR 1.50 rate and EUR 22.50 cap apply to visits commencing on or after 1 July 2026. This date matters more than the date on which the booking was originally made.
Adults are counted at the start of the visit
The rule applies to a person who is 18 or older at the start of the visit. A family budget should count qualifying guests separately, then apply the nightly cap to each one.
The provider collects the contribution
The accommodation operator is responsible for charging and reporting the eco-contribution. Expect it to appear as its own line or payment rather than assuming every booking platform included it in the advertised room price.
Malta and Gozo belong to the same visit question
When a trip changes accommodation or crosses from Malta to Gozo, keep the previous receipt and ask the next licensed property how the continuous-visit cap is being recorded. Do not silently pay beyond the legal maximum without checking.
Older web pages may show the old fifty-cent rule
Malta previously charged EUR 0.50 per night with a EUR 5 cap. That information remains on older notices and travel articles. For visits starting from July 2026, use the updated tax-administration guidance.
