A thank-you, not a tax

Tipping in Croatia

Good service can earn a rounded bill or a modest percentage. The trick is to let the setting lead rather than importing a twenty-percent reflex to every Adriatic coffee.

Tipping is appreciated in Croatian tourism but is not a mandatory addition to every bill. Five to ten percent suits good restaurant service; rounding works for cafes and taxis. Check for an included charge first.

The Croatian tipping rule Round up for a small pleasant service, leave 5–10% after a good sit-down meal and use more only for genuinely exceptional help. No tip is required for poor service.

Cash tips are often the clearest

Some terminals cannot add a gratuity after the bill amount is entered. Ask before tapping. A small euro cash tip reaches the moment cleanly and avoids a second card transaction.

“Tip not included” is information, not a commandIt means the listed total contains no gratuity. You still decide whether the service deserves one and how much.

Read a tourist-center bill slowly

  • Check ordered items and quantities.
  • Identify cover, bread or service lines.
  • Ask about unfamiliar charges before paying.
  • Calculate the tip from the actual euro bill.
  • Keep the receipt until the card charge settles.

Do not tip with leftover kuna

Kuna is no longer legal tender, and kuna coins can no longer be exchanged. A Croatian euro, useful cash or a sincere hvala is a better thank-you.
