China has rapidly expanded its departure tax-refund system. The same-day threshold fell to 200 yuan at one participating store in 2025, instant refunds spread nationwide, and a 2026 upgrade introduced paperless verification, cross-region recognition and lighter physical checks for smaller claims.
The refund has three doors
Two hundred yuan opens the claim
The threshold is based on one overseas visitor spending at least 200 yuan at the same participating store on the same day. Receipts from unrelated shops do not combine into one qualifying purchase. The store must be registered for the departure-refund scheme.
The refund is not the full VAT printed in your imagination
Instant means advance, not finished
At a participating refund-upon-purchase store, the refund can be advanced in renminbi after you sign an agreement and provide a personal credit card for pre-authorization. The guarantee is released after compliant departure verification. If the claim fails or you do not depart as promised, the advance can be recovered from that card.
July 2026 shortened the airport ritual
Applications involving goods under 10,000 yuan are now subject to random physical inspection rather than automatic item-by-item inspection. Larger claims still receive full physical checks. Paperless verification lets customs and refund agencies confirm records online, but travellers should still keep goods and supporting information accessible.
Cross-region recognition suits a long journey
The 2026 system allows an instant refund obtained in one participating region to be completed at an eligible departure port elsewhere. The nationwide allowable departure period for instant refunds was extended to 28 days. Confirm the route and port before treating the advance as final spending money.
Used goods lose the story
Eligible goods are for personal use and must leave China without having been used or consumed. Services, food already eaten and items left behind cannot perform the departure step. Pack refund purchases where customs can inspect them before you surrender checked luggage.
