The QR code needs a wallet

How to Join China's Mobile Checkout

The square on the counter is not the payment method by itself. Your app, identity, foreign card and the merchant's code all have to meet in the right order.

Alipay and Weixin Pay are everyday infrastructure in China, from restaurants and taxis to attractions and convenience stores. Overseas visitors can link supported international cards, but the smoothest first scan begins before the queue, with registration, card verification and a small test purchase already complete.

The quick answer Install Alipay or WeChat from an official app store, register with a phone number that can receive verification messages, complete the requested identity check and link a supported foreign card. Test both ways of paying: scanning the merchant's collection code and presenting your own payment code. Keep cash and a physical card as backups.

The two QR dances face opposite directions

At one counter, you scan the merchant's collection code and enter the amount. At another, you show a changing payment code for the cashier to scan. Read the recipient and amount before confirming. A QR sticker placed over another deserves a pause and a question.

The 200-yuan line can change the fee

A promotion is not a permanent tariff

Published government guidance describes a 3% service fee above 200 yuan for international cards linked to the major apps. Weixin Pay has also offered temporary waivers for new international-card users. Treat the confirmation screen and current service agreement as the final price, not a screenshot from a past trip.

A linked card does not unlock every feature

Everyday merchant purchases are the main visitor use case. Person-to-person transfers, red packets, certain mini-program purchases and regulated services may require a mainland account or stronger verification. A successful coffee scan does not promise that every financial feature is available.

Build the wallet before airplane mode

Download, register and contact your issuer before departure if possible. Keep data access, battery power and the app's login method available in China. A small power bank and a modest cash reserve are not old-fashioned; they are the offline layer of a mobile wallet.

The digital yuan is a third route, not a requirement

Some visitors can open an e-CNY wallet with an overseas phone number and top it up from a supported international card. It can be an interesting alternative, but Alipay, Weixin Pay, bank cards and cash already provide a complete visitor toolkit. Do not add another wallet unless it solves a real need.
