A long security queue can look like a ticket queue, and commercial booking pages can make the basilica seem like a paid attraction. The official basilica guidance is unambiguous: ordinary entrance to St Peter's is free.
One building, two different prices
Security is compulsory even when admission is free
Everyone still passes the checkpoints in St Peter's Square. A purchased Dome or reserved-service QR code does not erase security, so time before the booked slot still belongs in the plan.
The lift does not reach the top
The Dome lift stops at terrace level. From there, 320 steps remain to the outer ring; the all-stairs route totals 551. Paying for the lift reduces the climb but does not turn it into a step-free viewpoint.
A Dome ticket also shapes the basilica visit
Current online Dome products include access to the basilica and a digital audio guide. The confirmation tells visitors whether the basilica comes before or after the ascent, depending on the assigned route.
The free door still has a dress code
Shoulders and knees must be covered. Large backpacks and bulky luggage are not allowed, and the basilica currently has no cloakroom, so an unsuitable bag can waste more than money.
Treat the QR code like a non-refundable ticket
Online Dome reservations cannot be changed or refunded and are valid for one visit. Check the name, email, date and route before paying, then keep the voucher and personal QR codes available on the phone.
