Switzerland's rail system is wonderfully legible once one habit becomes automatic: buy first, board second. SBB does not sell tickets onboard, and there is no grace period after the train starts moving. The same rule applies to a conventional ticket and to an app journey started with EasyRide.
Choose the right lane before reaching the platform
The deadline is the actual departure
SBB states that the purchase or check-in process must be fully completed before the train, bus or boat's actual departure. If the service is delayed, the actual departure is the relevant moment, but waiting for the doors to close is needless risk. Open the ticket and confirm its date, traveller and route while still standing calmly on the platform.
A payment confirmation is not always a travel credential
Ticket machines can turn euros into francs
SBB ticket machines accept CHF coins and notes, euro notes, cards, mobile wallets and TWINT. If a machine accepts your euros, change is returned in Swiss francs. That can solve a one-off arrival problem, but it should not replace comparing the EUR conversion with a straightforward card payment in CHF.
A Swiss Travel Pass is broad, not universal
The Swiss Travel Pass is for people permanently resident outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein. It covers trains, buses and boats across a large network, city transport in more than 90 towns and selected mountain excursions; other mountain trips may receive a discount instead of full inclusion. Carry the original passport or identity document required with the pass.
The Half Fare Card can beat unlimited travel
A visitor who plans a few expensive mountain railways rather than constant national movement should compare the Swiss Half Fare Card and individual tickets with a Swiss Travel Pass. Build the actual route first. A pass only saves money when its coverage matches the trip, and a scenic train may still require a separate reservation.
One app can cross operators, but rules still matter
SBB Mobile sells public-transport tickets throughout Switzerland, making it a useful visitor hub. It does not erase product conditions: saver tickets can tie you to a connection, passes have coverage limits and local transport may use zone logic. Read the ticket before buying, not when an inspector asks.
