The refund begins in the shop and finishes before the goods leave

The Receipt That Flies Home

Singapore's eTRS can return part of the GST on eligible goods, but the airport cannot repair a purchase that was never registered in the shop.

The electronic Tourist Refund Scheme is a journey with three locations: a participating retailer, an airport kiosk and, when requested, a Customs inspection point. Its most important step happens before the shopping bag leaves the store.

The quick answer At a participating eTRS retailer, spend at least S$100 including GST and ask to register the purchase using your original passport and electronic Visit Pass. Up to three same-day receipts from the same GST registration number and shop name can meet the threshold. Export the eligible goods through Changi or Seletar within two months and process checked-bag items before check-in.

Three receipts can become one threshold

IRAS allows up to three same-day invoices or receipts from retailers bearing the same GST registration number and shop name to reach S$100. Separate boutiques in one mall do not automatically combine. Ask the retailer before assuming several small purchases belong to one eTRS transaction.

The refund is smaller than the GST line

A central refund agency or retailer deducts handling charges, so the amount returned is less than the GST originally paid. Consider the net refund and airport time before treating every S$100 purchase as a compulsory claim.

Used services do not fly home

The scheme covers eligible goods exported with the traveller. Hotel stays, restaurant meals and other services consumed in Singapore do not qualify, nor do goods already wholly or partly consumed before departure.

Checked luggage changes the order

If an eligible purchase will be checked in, visit the designated GST refund area in the departure check-in hall before surrendering the bag. Keep the goods, passport and documents available in case Customs asks to inspect them.

Approval starts a twelve-hour departure clock

IRAS requires the traveller to depart with the goods within 12 hours after refund approval. Arrive early enough for the kiosk and possible inspection, but do not process the claim a day before a much later flight.
