A hotel, mall or major attraction may make Singapore feel almost frictionless by card. Then a hawker stall presents a laminated QR label, a handwritten cash sign or a payment mix your overseas app cannot use. That is not a contradiction; it is the reason a small Singapore-dollar pocket remains useful.
Give each payment method one clear job
Pack lunch before joining the queue
SGQR is a signpost, not a single wallet
Singapore Quick Response Code combines accepted QR schemes on one label. The small logos tell you which rails the merchant accepts. PayNow is one of those rails and normally lives inside participating Singapore bank or major-payment-institution apps. A foreign phone camera recognizing the code does not prove that your home banking app can send the payment.
Cash is the universal fallback at the food stall
Singapore's Hawkers Go Digital programme has expanded QR acceptance, but stall participation and the schemes on each label vary. Small SGD notes avoid app eligibility, roaming and verification surprises. They also keep a busy lunch queue moving without asking a stallholder to break a S$100 note.
Use bank-operated ATMs and keep the screen in SGD
Withdraw only the reserve you expect to use, review the machine fee and choose Singapore dollars if an ATM offers to convert the withdrawal into your home currency. That conversion is a separate exchange offer. Your own card may provide the better rate, so compare before accepting it.
A backup card should fail differently
Two cards in the same wallet and on the same phone can disappear together. Store the backup separately and, where practical, use another network or issuer. Keep enough cash for a meal and the journey back rather than carrying the entire trip budget.
The hawker table has its own non-money rule
After paying, return the tray and crockery at the return station. Singapore treats tray return at hawker centres, food courts and coffeeshops as part of the public dining system. It is a useful reminder that the successful transaction ends after the table is cleared, not when the QR says paid.
