Visa, Mastercard and the domestic Bancomat and PagoBancomat networks are familiar across Italy. Cards are strongest in formal businesses, while small euro cash remains convenient at bars, markets and transport edges.
Three pieces of the cafe payment
Standing and sitting can have different prices
An espresso taken at the bar may cost less than table service in a famous piazza. Read the posted list and ask before sitting rather than assuming the counter price follows the cup to the terrace.
The receipt is part of the purchase
Italy's official tourism guidance tells visitors to ask for and keep the receipt or bill. It supports returns and guarantees and provides evidence of an official transaction.
Bancomat is both a word and a network
In everyday speech, bancomat can mean an ATM or debit-card payment. A PagoBancomat logo refers to a domestic payment network, so international visitors should still look for Visa or Mastercard acceptance.
Let your own card convert
When an ATM offers your home currency, choosing EUR normally allows your card issuer and network to handle conversion. Read the operator fee before confirming and prefer bank-operated machines where practical.
