The QR code question

QRIS for Visitors

QRIS can reach a street stall, a market trader and a polished restaurant with the same square code. The real question is whether your home payment app belongs to a participating cross-border route.

QRIS is Bank Indonesia's national QR payment standard. It appears across every province and regency, including micro businesses, travel destinations and places of worship. That reach makes it a useful payment layer, but a visible QRIS code does not make every overseas banking app eligible to pay it.

The important distinction A QRIS sign is a merchant's acceptance code, not a universal invitation. You need a participating payment provider from a QRIS cross-border partner market, with an app that actually supports the connection.

What the QR can do

Local QRISIndonesian wallets and bank apps use QRIS broadly across merchants.
Cross-border QRISEligible visitors from partner markets can use participating home payment apps at QRIS merchants.
Foreign cardA normal international card does not automatically become a QRIS wallet just because it has a camera app.
Cash fallbackRupiah remains the universal answer when the merchant, app or connection does not cooperate.

Check your route before treating it as a wallet

Bank Indonesia currently describes QRIS cross-border links for visitors from several partner markets, including Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea and China. Participation depends on the actual payment provider, not only your passport or phone. Check your own bank or wallet before the trip, then make one low-value test payment before relying on QRIS for a full day.

The safe scan ritual

  • Confirm the merchant name in the app before approving.
  • Check the rupiah amount yourself.
  • Use your own data connection and the merchant's visible code.
  • Wait for the success notice in the app before leaving.
  • Keep card and cash ready when a scan does not complete.
QRIS is an extra lane, not a replacement walletIts strength is reaching small businesses that may not have card terminals. Its weakness is eligibility. The best Indonesian wallet still has a card and spendable rupiah behind it.

What merchants receive

For a successful eligible cross-border payment, the visitor's participating app debits the home-currency balance with conversion, while the Indonesian merchant sees the rupiah transaction. Bank Indonesia sets a QRIS transaction limit of Rp10 million per transaction, but individual providers can apply lower daily or monthly controls.
