The bus card that remembers your day

Tap, Transfer and Let the Fare Cap Work

On capital-area Strætó buses, one contactless card can become a ticket, a transfer memory and a ceiling on what you pay. It only remembers the exact payment object you keep using.

Reykjavík's contactless bus payment looks beautifully simple: tap a bank card and ride. Under that tap is a more useful system. The same card earns a 75-minute transfer window and limits adult charges after enough journeys in a day or week. The catch is equally precise: the plastic card and the phone-wallet version of that card are treated as different payment methods.

The quick answer On Strætó buses in the capital area, tap the same contactless Visa, Mastercard or Europay payment method every time you board. One tap buys one adult ticket. A new boarding with that same payment method within 75 minutes adds no new fare, and fare capping limits charges to three adult fares per day and nine per week. A physical card and its phone-wallet version do not share that history.

Every boarding still gets a scan

The transfer is not a licence to walk past the reader. Tap the same payment method on every capital-area boarding, including one inside the valid 75-minute window. The system recognises the earlier purchase and avoids an additional charge. There is no London-style tap-out at the end of the ride.

One card buys one adult ticket

A single contactless tap covers one adult passenger. Do not assume one bank card can casually pay for a whole group while preserving the normal transfer and cap logic. For several travellers, children or concession products, use the official ticket options that match the group rather than improvising at the reader.

Capital buses and rural buses use different rules

The contactless transfer and capping system belongs to the capital area. On provincial routes, buses use ordinary point-of-sale payment and can accept debit or credit card, tickets or cash according to Strætó's terms. Do not carry the Reykjavík cap assumption onto a longer rural route.

Klapp and the City Card solve different trips

Klapp app tickets must be activated before boarding and apply to the capital system. A Reykjavík City Card bundles unlimited city buses with museums, pools and other attractions for a fixed 24-, 48- or 72-hour period. Compare the actual itinerary: contactless is excellent for casual rides, while a pass can suit a museum-and-pool day.
