Sofia's pay-as-you-go system accepts contactless Visa, Mastercard and Bcard directly at validators across the city network. A visitor does not need to register or buy a separate Sofia City Card for ordinary rides.
The EUR 2 day unfolds quietly
A contactless tap uses the 30+ ticket, which allows a transfer within 30 minutes of the first validation. Continue validating when required even after reaching the cap. The final bank charge is processed after the day's travel is assembled.
A plastic card and its phone copy are different travelers
Tokenized cards have a separate transport identity. Tap the physical card in the morning and the phone in the afternoon, and the system cannot combine those rides for the cap. A watch is another identity again.
The Sofia tap routine
- Choose one card or device for the entire day.
- At metro gates, present it to the blue reader.
- On tram, trolleybus or bus, validate at the onboard device.
- Wait for the accepted response before moving away.
- Keep using that exact payment identity for transfers and later rides.
- Use the official portal to inspect journeys if a charge looks unfamiliar.
When a Sofia City Card makes more sense
A physical or virtual Sofia City Card can hold longer-duration and specialist products. The Ultralight paper carrier supports short-stay products such as 30+, 60+, day, 24-hour and 72-hour tickets. Direct bank-card payment is simplest for flexible occasional travel; a loaded product can be better when the itinerary clearly favors it.
Then the wallet changes at the taxi door
Sofia taxis must display their tariffs on a windscreen sticker, together with company and driver information. Read the kilometer rate before entering. Day and night tariffs differ, and the city sets minimum and maximum per-kilometer ranges rather than one universal price.
| Before a taxi ride | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Check company branding and driver identification | A similar-looking vehicle is not necessarily the company you intended to use. |
| Read the windscreen price sticker | The displayed rate is the useful comparison before the meter starts. |
| Book through a known company, app or hotel | You create a record and reduce ambiguity at busy tourist locations. |
| Ask whether card payment works | Do not assume every taxi terminal or app workflow is identical. |
| Keep small euro cash | It covers a valid fare and an optional rounded tip without breaking a large note. |
Outside Sofia, reset your assumptions
The capital's bank-card-as-ticket system is not a national transport rule. For intercity trains, regional buses and another city's local network, buy the operator's actual ticket and confirm payment before boarding. A blue Sofia validator has taught your card a local trick, not a countrywide one.
