Card acceptance is straightforward in larger hotels, supermarkets, shopping centers and many city restaurants. It is not universal. Bulgaria rewards a mixed wallet: cards for recorded, higher-value spending and small euro cash for independent or less connected stops.
Give every payment method a Bulgarian job
| Situation | Useful default | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Sofia hotel, museum or supermarket | Card or phone | Pay in EUR and know your issuer's foreign-use fee. |
| Black Sea resort | Card plus small cash | The beachfront venue and the family cafe may have different acceptance. |
| Market, bakery or small restaurant | EUR 5, 10 and 20 | Ask before ordering rather than after the meal. |
| Guesthouse or rural stop | Confirmed method plus full fallback | Message the host before leaving ATM access. |
| Mountain or monastery day | Planned small-cash reserve | Connectivity, ticket desk and next withdrawal point. |
| ATM withdrawal | Bank-affiliated machine | Operator fee, issuer fee and unwanted conversion. |
Local Bcard is not the same as your foreign card
Bcard is Bulgaria's domestic card scheme. A terminal may show Bcard beside Visa and Mastercard, but the local logo alone does not promise that a foreign card works. Read the accepted network marks and keep a second payment route.
Choose the ATM before it chooses the exchange rate
Prefer a machine visibly attached to a bank branch or established bank network. Cover the keypad, inspect the card slot and cancel if the machine behaves unexpectedly. Tourist-heavy areas can attract tampering and independently operated ATMs with prominent convenience branding may carry higher fees.
Select euros at the screen
Bulgaria now uses EUR, so a home-currency offer at an ATM or terminal is dynamic currency conversion, not a helpful continuation of the old lev peg. Choosing EUR normally leaves conversion to your network and issuer. Compare that with your card terms rather than accepting a familiar-looking total automatically.
Build a spendable EUR 120 reserve
Add a few EUR 1 and 2 coins from ordinary change. Keep the EUR 50 protected for a real gap; let smaller notes handle markets, tips and low-value purchases.
Old lev needs a different pocket
Lev has not been legal tender since 1 February 2026. Do not mix it into current cash or hand it to a merchant. The Bulgarian National Bank exchanges lev free of charge, without amount limit and without a deadline; banks and selected post offices have separate 2026 terms.
Before leaving the city
- Confirm payment with the guesthouse, guide or transfer provider.
- Withdraw enough for the route, not the whole holiday.
- Keep a card and one reserve note outside the main wallet.
- Download tickets or booking details for weak-signal areas.
- Break EUR 50 at a supermarket, not a tiny stall.
- Use licensed transport and ask for a receipt when appropriate.
