One country, four payment habits

The Belgian Transit Wallet

A bank card can be a Brussels ticket, a Flanders group purchase and no ticket at all on the national railway. Learn the operator before you learn the tap.

Belgium's transport map is also a payment map. STIB-MIVB runs Brussels urban transport, De Lijn covers Flanders, TEC covers Wallonia and SNCB-NMBS runs the national trains. Similar-looking readers do not create one national tap-and-go system.

The rule before every ride Identify the operator. In Brussels and on De Lijn, a supported contactless bank card can be the ticket. For TEC, prepare a ticket in the app or approved sales channel. For SNCB-NMBS, buy before boarding.

Brussels: your bank card becomes the ticket

STIB-MIVB accepts contactless payment directly at its readers. Use the same physical card, phone or watch for each journey and for transfers inside the permitted window. The system applies its daily cap to that payment identity. A physical card and that same card in Apple Pay are technically different identities.

One person, one Brussels payment identityA couple cannot pass the same card back and forth at the gate. Each traveler needs a separate card, device or ordinary ticket.

Flanders: the same card can pay for a small group

De Lijn's white contactless terminals accept supported foreign Visa and Mastercard products. For several travelers, tap once for each person using the same payment method; De Lijn permits payment for up to five people this way. A transfer within the network's stated window is not charged again when you use the same method correctly.

This is the opposite of the Brussels one-person rule, which is why remembering the operator matters more than memorizing a generic “Belgium is contactless” slogan.

Wallonia: prepare the ticket, not just the card

TEC's app can buy and validate tickets and supports common digital payment methods. A traveler can also use TEC's other approved ticket channels. The key distinction is that paying for a ticket and using a bank card itself as the ticket are not the same action. Buy and activate the correct product before the journey requires it.

National rail: buy before you board

From 1 July 2026, SNCB-NMBS no longer sells tickets on the train. Buy through the official website or app, a station machine or a staffed counter before boarding. Traveling without a valid ticket can lead to a fixed irregularity charge, with narrow provisions when no functioning sales channel exists at the departure station.

The payment-device identity trap

Physical cardOne transport identity, even when it shares a bank account with your phone.
Phone walletA separate token. Keep using the phone after the first tap.
Watch walletAnother separate token, not interchangeable with the phone.
Low batteryA backup card helps, but switching can split fares or leave an incomplete journey.

A five-second platform check

  1. Find the operator logo on the stop, vehicle or journey planner.
  2. Decide whether the bank card is the ticket or merely pays for one.
  3. Use one device consistently where fares depend on taps.
  4. Keep mobile tickets activated and ready for inspection.
  5. Check current fares and airport supplements before travel.
