Belgian restaurant and bar prices include service. Paying the amount on the bill is normal and complete. When service has been especially warm or helpful, rounding the total or adding a modest extra is welcome rather than compulsory.
Match the thank-you to the moment
| Situation | Comfortable local move | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurant meal | Pay the total; round up or add about 5–10% for notably good service | Automatically adding a large US-style percentage |
| Cafe or bar | Leave small change or round a table bill | Feeling obliged after every counter drink |
| Taxi | Round up a convenient euro amount for a smooth ride | Inventing a fixed percentage rule |
| Hotel porter | EUR 1–2 per bag when help is substantial | Tipping for a service you did not request |
| Housekeeping | A few euros for excellent service, preferably with a clear note | Leaving ambiguous coins among personal items |
| Tour guide | A modest amount based on length, group size and quality | Treating a free-tour model like an ordinary prepaid tour |
Rounding can mean two different things
Belgium rounds the final cash transaction to the nearest five cents. That legal checkout rounding is not a tip. If a EUR 24.98 cash bill becomes EUR 25.00, you have simply paid the rounded total. Choosing EUR 27 or EUR 28 is the optional thank-you.
Card tips work best when discussed before the payment closes
Some terminals or venues can add a tip to the card transaction; others cannot adjust the total once it has been entered. Say the amount you want to pay before tapping. If the workflow is awkward, a small cash tip is perfectly clear.
In multilingual Belgium, a simple merci or dank u does plenty of social work. You do not need to perform a complicated tipping ritual to be polite.
How to avoid tipping twice
- Read the printed total and any line describing a supplement.
- Remember that normal service is already included in menu prices.
- Separate a genuine tip prompt from the terminal's default interface.
- On group bills, check whether someone has already handled the extra.
- Do not let a familiar percentage button override the local custom.
What “optional” should feel like
A Belgian tip can be small, irregular and personal. You might leave nothing after correct routine service, round EUR 46 to EUR 50 after a generous dinner, or hand a guide several euros after an excellent walk. The common thread is choice, not arithmetic.
