Swedish city transport is friendly to a short-stay visitor because an ordinary foreign payment card can become the travel credential. The danger is assuming that one city's tap logic travels with you. Stockholm has a 75-minute SL ticket and no touch-out. Gothenburg's Zone A tap lasts 90 minutes and repeats on transfers. Skane's green city buses use a one-hour city-zone ticket with their own daily charging rule.

Stockholm makes the card an SL ticket
SL accepts contactless Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards and their mobile-wallet versions across its transport services. The first tap buys an adult single ticket valid for 75 minutes. Further taps during that period count as transfers, and there is no touch-out. A phone wallet and the plastic card linked to it are separate identities, so changing object can buy a second ticket.
Gothenburg's easy tap has a Zone A fence
A Västtåg train is not another tram reader
Västtrafik's open bank-card tap is for eligible Zone A buses, trams and boats. You cannot begin by tapping directly on a Västtåg train, though a valid Zone A tap ticket can cover a transfer to a train inside the zone. If the reader lacks the contactless symbol or the route extends into Zone B, use Västtrafik To Go or another sales channel.
Skane gives the city bus its own small cap
On green Skane city buses, a contactless card buys one city-zone ticket and allows unlimited travel within that zone for one hour. If the same card is tapped repeatedly over 24 hours, the charge is capped at two single tickets. Only one traveller can ride per bank card. Trains, regional travel and Denmark-bound journeys need the Skånetrafiken app, machine or appropriate ticket.
Adult convenience is not always the cheapest fare
Direct bank-card taps default to a simple adult ticket unless the operator explicitly supports a registered discount. Families, young travellers, seniors, students and groups should compare the app or visitor products before tapping. Skane, for example, offers group discounts when travellers buy a joint ticket, while one-card-per-person contactless taps cannot reproduce that purchase.
Sweden has city tap systems, not one national tap
An SL tap does not become a Gothenburg or Malmö ticket, and it does not replace a long-distance rail booking. For SJ, Öresundståg and other regional or national journeys, buy the required ticket before boarding. The safe habit is to identify the operator, fare zone and valid object before reaching the platform.
