T-money and EZL are stored-value transport cards used across Korean public transport networks. Buy one, add won and tap as you travel. They remove the need to understand every fare before boarding and can unlock transfer discounts when used correctly.
Choose the card by the job
Your overseas card usually cannot be the gate key
According to VISITKOREA's transportation guide, foreign-issued cards are not accepted for direct tap payment at ordinary AREX, bus and subway readers. Korea may be card-friendly at shops, but transit uses its own compatible stored-value layer.
The reload is where cash reappears
Transport-card purchase and reload are generally cash-only in the official visitor guidance, and foreign-issued cards are not normally accepted for that task. A few ₩1,000, ₩5,000 and ₩10,000 notes are therefore part of a good digital-transport plan.
- Ask for T-money or EZL at a participating convenience store.
- Pay the separate card purchase price, then load the amount you want to use.
- Check the balance after loading instead of assuming the full cash payment became travel credit.
- Top up before the balance becomes too low for the next ride.
- Keep the card until the trip is over; it can be used again across compatible networks.
Tap out, even when the gate feels open
On buses, tap when boarding and again when leaving. The exit tap helps calculate the correct fare and preserve eligible transfer discounts. On rail systems, tap through the entry and exit gates with the same card.
One traveler, one card
Giving each person a separate card keeps journeys, transfers and balances clean. Do not alternate between cards or phones during one trip. The system needs the same payment token at the start and end to understand the journey.
It can buy more than movement
T-money and similar cards can be accepted at affiliated convenience stores and other merchants. That makes leftover balance easier to use, but the transport function should remain the priority. Keep enough value for the next ride before turning the card into a snack wallet.
Airport journeys need one extra check
Airport trains include different service types and ticketing rules. A transport card may suit the all-stop service, while a reserved express product can use its own ticket. Follow the current signs and official service information rather than assuming every train from the same platform uses the same fare product.
