There is no single correct cash amount for South Korea. A traveler moving between urban hotels, major rail stations and card-friendly restaurants needs less than someone spending the day in traditional markets, smaller towns or places with fewer dependable ATMs.
Build the reserve from jobs, not fear
Three sample wallet shapes
| Trip pattern | Starting idea | What changes it |
|---|---|---|
| Seoul, card-first | ₩50,000 | More if transport cards for several people need loading |
| Mixed city and markets | ₩70,000 to ₩100,000 | Street-food plans and cash-heavy shopping |
| Day trips or smaller places | ₩100,000 or a route-based buffer | Distance to the next known international ATM |
These are starting points, not spending targets or guarantees. Accommodation, shopping and long-distance tickets belong in the card-and-budget plan, not automatically in the cash pocket.
Protect the transport money from lunch
Transport-card reloads can be cash-only, so reserve those notes physically or mentally. If every small note disappears at a market, the remaining cash may technically be enough but awkward to load or spend.
Replenish before the reserve becomes the emergency
Check your cash and transport-card balance while passing a dependable ATM or staffed convenience store, not after the last train connection. A reserve is useful only when it is restored after doing its job.
Carry less, split better
Keep daily won accessible and any larger backup separate. Store the secondary card away from the main wallet. This protects you from loss and makes it easier to pay without displaying the whole reserve.
Know the declaration line
Korea Customs Service requires travelers arriving with more than USD 10,000 or the equivalent in combined payment instruments and currencies, including Korean won, to declare it. Rules can differ for departure and residency status, so consult the current customs guidance when carrying a large amount.
The best reserve shrinks as certainty grows
After the first successful card payment, ATM withdrawal and transport-card reload, you know more about your own setup. Use that evidence to adjust the wallet instead of carrying the same nervous amount throughout the trip.
