Every city owns the final validation step

Scan First, Then Ride

Buying a Polish city ticket can put it on the phone without starting its clock; Warsaw and Kraków each ask the passenger to connect that ticket to the actual vehicle.

Poland has no single visitor tap that covers every tram, bus and metro. Local authorities set fare zones, time windows, apps and validation. Warsaw and Kraków demonstrate the useful national habit: identify the city system, buy the right time or zone and make sure the ticket is active immediately.

The quick answer In Warsaw, a mobile ticket must be validated by scanning the vehicle QR after boarding, or before crossing the metro gate line. In Kraków, app purchase for validation requires the vehicle number or its QR code, while paper tickets requiring validation must be stamped immediately after boarding. Do not assume a ticket bought in one city or app works in another.

A Warsaw metro QR is both clock and doorway

Vehicle stickers can be scanned from a short distance. At metro stations, codes sit before gates and near elevators into the paid zone; gates with QR readers can admit mobile tickets. Starting the ticket after an inspector appears is too late.

Kraków asks which vehicle you actually entered

For app tickets that need validation, Kraków requires the vehicle number or a scan of its QR code. The vehicle identifier is displayed inside. The transport authority can block mobile sales to a vehicle when inspection begins, specifically preventing a passenger from buying only after the request to show a ticket.

A broken on-board machine is not a free ride

Kraków's authority states that failure of one mobile ticket machine does not authorise free travel. Use another valid sales channel or follow the operator's instructions. Paper tickets requiring validation should be stamped immediately upon entering the vehicle.

Time tickets make transfers easy only inside the same system

A 15-, 30-, 60- or 90-minute product can cover transfers while its clock runs, but the zones and available durations differ by city. A Warsaw ticket is not a Kraków ticket, and urban tickets are not automatically valid on every regional or intercity train.

The correct order is city, zone, duration, activation

Check the local transport authority before travel, then choose the product. Buying the cheapest-looking ticket before understanding an airport zone or suburban boundary can create a fine larger than the difference between fares.
