Your bank card becomes the ticket

Tap In, Tap Out

OVpay can turn the card already in your wallet into a ticket across the Dutch train, bus, tram and metro network.

Eligible contactless debit cards, credit cards, phones and watches can check in and out through OVpay. There is no separate ticket to buy for a straightforward pay-as-you-go journey.

The quick answer Use one payment method for the entire journey: tap in, travel and tap out with that same card or device. A physical card and the mobile wallet version of it can be recognized as different methods, so do not switch halfway.

The whole journey in three moves

Tap inCard, phone or watchOVTap outUse the same method

One traveller, one payment method

Each passenger needs a distinct card or device for check-in. You cannot tap a whole family through on one bank card because that card can hold only one active journey at a time.

Card and phone are not interchangeable

A mobile wallet creates its own digital card identity. If you check in with the plastic card and check out with the phone, the system may see two separate actions instead of one completed journey. Pick one and keep using it.

The little check-out is the big rule

OVpay calculates the journey from the check-in and check-out. Missing the second tap can produce an incomplete trip and an incorrect charge. The OVpay app and website provide tools for viewing journeys and correcting a missed check-in or check-out.

Take the card out of the wallet

Present one card to the reader rather than a wallet full of contactless cards. This prevents card clash and makes it obvious which payment method must return at the end of the journey.

Pay-as-you-go is not every travel product

A direct bank-card tap is excellent for ordinary travel, but subscriptions, age discounts and special products can follow different rules. Use the OVpay switch helper or the transport operator when the cheapest fare depends on more than a simple journey.
