Do not make Mexico a cash-only trip, and do not make it a card-only trip either. Payment acceptance can vary by business and location. A usable card plus a working reserve of Mexican pesos gives you the most flexibility when the plan changes.
Where each payment method fits
| Situation | Useful default | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel or larger planned purchase | Card where accepted | Ask before committing when payment choice matters. |
| Market, street food or a small independent business | Pesos | Smaller notes make payment and change easier. |
| Taxi or short local service | Check first; keep cash available | Payment options can vary, so avoid assuming. |
| Cash withdrawal | Use a planned, well-lit ATM stop | Know your own bank's fees and withdrawal settings. |
Use official location tools when you need an ATM or exchange service
Banco de México publishes Ubicajeros, a locator for nearby ATMs that also includes withdrawal-fee information reported by banks. Its Ubicambio tool maps participating banks and exchange houses for dollar and other foreign-currency exchange. These are useful starting points when you need to make a deliberate cash stop rather than exchange at the first place you see.
At the ATM
Check your card issuer's foreign-cash settings, daily limit and fee policy before travel. Take a moment to read the screen rather than accepting a conversion option by reflex. A familiar home-currency total can feel reassuring, but the exchange rate and any markup are what decide the cost. Keep the receipt until the transaction appears correctly in your account.
Bring cash in, but know the declaration rule
Mexico's customs authority says anyone entering or leaving with more than US$10,000, or the equivalent in cash and specified monetary instruments, must declare it. Carrying a large amount is not itself a crime; failing to declare when required can lead to penalties. For normal travel, a moderate reserve and a backup card are usually easier to manage than carrying a large sum.
Before you leave home
- Confirm international purchases and cash withdrawals are enabled.
- Check card-network, foreign transaction and ATM fees.
- Know your PIN and bring a separate backup method.
- Save lost-card contact details outside your wallet.
- Arrive with a small peso reserve or a clear first-ATM plan.
