Since 1 March 2020, public transport has been free throughout Luxembourg. Visitors and residents can use domestic buses, trams and second-class trains without buying or validating a ticket.
The three-part free network
The airport ride is part of the idea
Luxembourg Airport is connected to the city by tram and bus. Because the journey stays on the national network, the ordinary ride costs EUR 0. There is no airport-ticket premium to hunt for after landing.
Free does not mean route-free
You still need to choose the correct platform, line and stop. Use the Mobiliteit journey planner for live routing and disruption information; the fare may vanish, but the timetable does not.
Children and visitors do not need a special pass
The nationwide free fare applies to everyone. There is no tourist card to collect and no local-resident proof to show for ordinary domestic travel.
First class keeps its ticket
CFL first-class train compartments are outside the free system. A domestic first-class ticket currently has its own fare ladder, while ordinary second class remains free.
Three stations stretch the free edge
Official fare guidance also extends free second-class train travel to Athus in Belgium and Audun-le-Tiche and Volmerange-les-Mines in France. Treat these as named exceptions, not as a general rule that the free network continues abroad.
