Trenitalia's current Digital Regional Ticket activates automatically at the scheduled departure of the selected train. A single paper regional ticket still needs validation at the origin station before boarding.
The three-ticket platform
Paper starts at the validating machine
A single paper regional ticket must be validated at the station where the journey begins. After validation, the ordinary validity window is four hours, subject to regional exceptions.
Digital no longer means manual check-in
The current Digital Regional Ticket is personal and non-transferable. It automatically validates at the scheduled departure time. Change the selected time before departure when plans move, and show the active ticket plus identification if requested.
Tap&Tap must be closed
At participating regional stations, tap the same contactless card before boarding and again on arrival. Missing the final tap can produce the maximum fare for that region instead of the journey actually taken.
Fast trains follow another contract
Frecciarossa and Intercity tickets are normally tied to a booked train and seat rather than a station stamp. Do not transfer Regionale flexibility to a high-speed booking; read that fare's change and refund conditions separately.
