OASA's Tap2Ride system accepts contactless Visa and Mastercard on metro, tram, trolley and bus. A physical card, phone and watch linked to the same account still appear as different payment methods to the fare system.
The three-tap rule
A phone and its plastic card are not twins here
If you enter with an iPhone and leave with the underlying physical card, the system sees two separate tokens. The same is true of a phone and smartwatch. That can break fare calculation, daily capping or create multiple charges.
The bank card replaces the ticket, not the validation
Tap2Ride removes the need to buy an ATH.ENA Ticket for supported full-fare journeys. It does not remove the need to validate correctly. Tap when boarding buses, trolleys and trams, and at the metro gates as instructed.
Airport and ordinary Athens are priced differently
The system supports ordinary 90-minute and daily travel as well as airport bus and metro products. Airport travel has its own fare, so do not use the ordinary city price as your airport budget. Check OASA's current fare page before travelling.
Discounted fares need another route
Bank-card travel is designed for full fares. Students and other passengers entitled to a discount need the appropriate personalised ATH.ENA product and proof of entitlement rather than expecting a foreign bank card to apply the reduction.
Avoid card clash at the reader
Take the chosen card out of the wallet before tapping. If the reader can see a bank card and an ATH.ENA Card together, it may select the wrong one or charge a payment method you did not intend to use.
