In 2025, 55% of recorded everyday purchases were cashless and 45% used cash. The most widely used debit scheme was Germany's own girocard.
Three signs, three different promises
Cash is not merely nostalgic
A 2025 Bundesbank field study found cash accepted at 99.4% of tested retail, food, drink and service locations. That does not mean every machine or public service takes notes, but it explains why cash still feels normal rather than exceptional.
Give the reserve useful denominations
EUR 5, 10 and 20 notes are easier than a EUR 100 note at a bakery, pub, market or family restaurant. Add EUR 1 and 2 coins for lockers, toilets and small purchases, and spend large notes where the till can comfortably make change.
Choose EUR at the Geldautomat
At an ATM, decline a conversion into your home currency when you want your own card network to handle the exchange. Read the machine fee, withdraw a sensible amount and use an established bank ATM when practical.
A local word is not an international guarantee
Girocard is sometimes still casually called EC-Karte. A sign showing only girocard or EC should make a foreign visitor ask, not assume. The clean question is: Visa oder Mastercard?
