Cyprus Public Transport introduced its current ticket policy on 3 August 2026. Visitors can still pay cash on board, but the network prices that convenience differently from a topped-up Motion card.
Cash or Motion?
| Method | Current urban daytime use |
|---|---|
| On-board cash | EUR 2.70 for one route; carry small euros |
| Anonymous Motion card | EUR 2.00 from topped-up e-wallet value |
| Personalised Motion card | EUR 2.00, with eligible discounts and transfer benefits |
| Paper Motion product | Multi-trip or short-stay products bought before boarding |
The night bus has its own price
The current urban night fare, between 21:00 and 04:00, is EUR 4.70 in cash or EUR 3.50 with a Motion card. A late arrival therefore changes the calculation: one cash ride may still be easiest, while repeated night travel makes the card more attractive.
The EUR 5 card cost needs a reason
Anonymous and personalised plastic Motion cards currently cost EUR 5 to issue. For a single ride, cash may be cheaper overall despite the higher fare. For several journeys, transfers or a pass, compare the full trip pattern before choosing.
Top up and validate are separate actions
Putting money into the e-wallet prepares the card; presenting it correctly records the journey. Keep the card available for inspection and watch the validator for confirmation instead of assuming the balance alone is a ticket.
Use the live fare page, not an old screenshot
Cyprus bus fares changed twice in 2026, which makes old travel posts unusually easy to misread. Check the effective date on the operator's page before relying on a price, pass or transfer rule.
