The checkout surprise

Why the Checkout Total Changes

A $20 shelf label may not mean a $20 card charge. Sales tax is often added at checkout, and crossing a state, county or city line can change the final number.

+$TAX

USAGov notes that most states and municipalities charge sales tax, but the percentage and the goods covered are not uniform. In much of the country the shelf or menu price is shown before tax, then the register calculates the state and local layers that apply to that purchase.

The travel habit Read a displayed price as the starting amount unless the seller says tax is included. Check the final screen before tapping, and leave room in the budget when a purchase must stay below a fixed total.

Four totals, four different questions

Shelf or menu priceThe advertised starting amount.
Checkout taxA location- and product-dependent amount added at checkout.
Service tipA separate decision for qualifying service, not another tax.
Hotel chargesRoom tax, destination or facility charges may use another calculation.

There is no national percentage to memorise

A rate learned in one city may be wrong in the next. States can exempt or tax groceries, clothing and other categories differently; counties and cities can add local rates. For an expensive purchase, use the official state or local revenue department instead of a generic national calculator.

Hotels deserve their own final-price check

A room can carry lodging taxes and disclosed property or destination fees that do not match the ordinary retail sales-tax rate. Compare the final booking total, cancellation terms and charges due at the property, not only the large nightly figure in search results.

Tax and tip are different layersSales tax is part of the purchase total. A voluntary tip or compulsory service charge is a separate line with a different purpose. Read both before adding another percentage.

Run the arithmetic on the final screen

A $10 snack may finish a little above $10. A $100 table-service meal can add sales tax and then a tip. The useful habit is not guessing every local rate; it is knowing which number is still provisional and checking the confirmed total before payment.
