How to Read a UAE Restaurant or Hotel Bill

VAT, service charge, tourism fees and a voluntary tip are different layers. A ten-second receipt scan keeps them from becoming one mysterious percentage.

A UAE bill can contain several legitimate lines without any of them being a tip. Federal VAT rules, an establishment's service charge and emirate-specific accommodation fees each answer a different question. The useful habit is to identify the line before deciding whether the total is correct or whether you want to add anything.

The five-line scan Check the base price, discount, service charge, VAT and local accommodation fee. Only after that should you choose the payment currency and decide whether an extra tip feels appropriate.

The common lines do different jobs

Service chargeA venue or booking charge connected to serviceSee whether it was disclosed and whether it is already in the total.
Tourism DirhamA Dubai accommodation fee linked to room nights and classificationIt should appear as a separate line; multi-bedroom units can be charged per bedroom.
Deposit or pre-authorisationA temporary card hold for incidentalsAsk how much, what it covers and when the unused amount is released.
Optional gratuityYour voluntary thank-youDo not confuse a suggested tip with a mandatory government fee.

The example is not a universal formula. It shows why “the bill is about 15% higher” is not enough information: part may be a disclosed service charge, part tax and part something else entirely.

VAT should not be a surprise after the menu

The Federal Tax Authority says consumer prices in menus, catalogues and price tags should be advertised inclusive of VAT. A valid tax invoice identifies the supplier's Tax Registration Number and shows the VAT amount. If the amount at payment differs from the displayed consumer price, ask for the itemised invoice before paying.

Service charge is not automatically the employee's tip

Visit Dubai advises checking the bill because service charge is often added to restaurant meals, tours and activities, and notes that it may go to the business rather than directly to the staff member. That does not make a second tip compulsory. It simply means “service charge” and “personal gratuity” are not identical concepts.

One decision, not two automatic percentagesRead the service line first. Then decide whether exceptional direct service deserves an additional amount. A card terminal's tip prompt is an invitation, not another tax.

Hotel totals can vary by emirate and room type

Accommodation charges are not identical across the seven emirates. In Dubai, the Tourism Dirham is calculated per room night and generally applies for up to 30 consecutive nights. A multi-bedroom holiday home can attract the fee for each bedroom, and DET guidance requires the charge to appear separately on the invoice.

Booking sites also differ in what they collect in advance. Before confirming a room, expand the tax-and-fee detail and note what remains payable at the property. At check-in, ask whether the card amount is a charge or only a temporary security hold.

Paying in your home currency creates a new layer

A terminal may offer a total in pounds, euros, kroner or another home currency. That is not a tax or hotel fee; it is a currency-conversion offer. Paying in AED usually leaves conversion to your card network and issuer. Read the exchange rate and markup before choosing the familiar-looking total.

Shopping receipts can have a second life

Eligible tourists can request a VAT refund on qualifying purchases from retailers enrolled in the official scheme. The current Federal Tax Authority service requires a minimum eligible purchase of AED 250 excluding VAT, validation within 90 days of the invoice and the ability to present the goods if requested. Fees are deducted from the refund, so not every small purchase is worth processing.

When a total looks wrong

  1. Ask for an itemised invoice rather than arguing from the card-terminal total.
  2. Compare each line with the menu, booking confirmation or disclosed conditions.
  3. Ask which amount is mandatory and which is optional.
  4. Check whether your card is being charged in AED.
  5. Keep the receipt and raise a calm question before leaving the venue.
