Six colours, six disciplines and one double-value surprise

Six Minds on the Lira

Turn over Turkey's six notes and the wallet becomes a pocket gallery of science, mathematics, architecture, literature, music and poetry.

Every current Turkish banknote places Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on the front, then gives the reverse to a different Turkish figure and field. That makes the colour ladder useful twice: it helps you pay quickly and gives each denomination its own story. The coin pocket adds a modern twist because 5 lira now circulates as both paper and metal.

The quick answer Current notes are TRY 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200. The circulating coin ladder runs from 1 kuruş to 5 lira. Learn 20 green, 50 orange, 100 blue and 200 purple first; they are the most useful visual anchors. Keep 5-lira notes and 5-lira coins together mentally because either one settles the same amount.

The portrait is only the beginning

Aydın Sayılı's 5-lira reverse links scientific history with the solar system, atoms, DNA and an ancient cave. Cahit Arf's 10 carries mathematical ideas, Mimar Kemaleddin's 20 turns toward architecture, Fatma Aliye's 50 toward literature and women's intellectual history, Itri's 100 toward classical music, and Yunus Emre's 200 toward poetry and Sufism. Our illustrations borrow those subjects without reproducing the official notes.

A note version can change without changing the money

The Central Bank has issued the E9 group in several series. Signature pairs and selected details can differ, while valid versions continue to circulate together. Do not reject a note only because it is not identical to an online image. Compare denomination, colour family, layout and the Central Bank's security guidance instead.

The 5-lira coin has joined the everyday set

The Turkish Mint lists a regular 5-lira circulation coin from June 2024. It is bimetallic and visually substantial, but it does not retire the 5-lira banknote. Both forms can appear in change. Smaller kuruş denominations remain part of the official ladder even when their purchasing power makes them less visible in ordinary visitor spending.

Six zeros belong to history, not today's till

Turkey removed six zeros from the lira in 2005 and dropped the word New from the currency in 2009. Old notes from the million-lira era are not current spending money. If a souvenir seller mentions millions, make sure the conversation is about a collectible rather than the amount due at the counter.
