The total is complete before the thank-you

The Optional Round-Up

A Swedish payment terminal may invite a gratuity, but the culture leaves room for zero, a rounded number or a deliberate reward for unusually good service.

Sweden does not treat a routine restaurant percentage as missing wages that the guest must repair. Service is covered in the price, and Visit Sweden describes tipping as welcome but not expected. The most natural gesture is often a small round-up that makes the final amount feel neat.

The quick answer No automatic tip is required. Pay the displayed total without embarrassment when service was ordinary. For friendly or notably good service, round up a restaurant or taxi amount; Visit Sweden uses SEK 280 to SEK 300 as a typical example and describes 10% as a nice voluntary tip, not a minimum.

A screen full of percentages is still only a question

Modern card terminals can display gratuity buttons even where no tip is expected. Check the bill, choose zero when that reflects the experience and ignore any visual pressure created by a large button. A voluntary prompt does not rewrite Swedish custom.

Check whether the bill already names a service charge

A service charge is not the everyday Swedish default, but it can appear and should be clearly stated. Read the receipt before adding anything. When a group menu, event or hotel package includes a stated service amount, an additional percentage is not required simply because the terminal asks.

Coffee does not need a compensation calculation

A cafe counter may offer a tip jar or digital prompt. Paying the listed price is normal. Add a few kronor when someone has been especially helpful or when table service went beyond the usual exchange, but do not turn every cinnamon bun into a cultural test.

Taxi and hotel totals are allowed to end where they end

For a taxi, the metered or app price is complete; rounding can thank a driver for luggage help or patient service. Hotels do not require a daily housekeeping envelope or a fixed porter amount. A personal thank-you, small round-up or positive review can be enough.

The cleanest tip uses the same currency as the bill

If you decide to tip, add kronor on the terminal or leave small SEK cash. Foreign coins are difficult for staff to use or exchange. Confirm that the selected amount is the final total before tapping, especially when a terminal combines tip and currency-conversion choices.
