The refund follows the item to the final EU border

The Last-EU-Stop Receipt

A Swedish tax-free purchase begins at SEK 200, but the decisive counter may be in another country if your flight home leaves the European Union somewhere else.

Visitors who live outside the EU may recover VAT on qualifying goods they personally carry out. The shop must participate and issue the correct tax-free receipt; a normal till receipt cannot invent the process later. The item, documents, passport and travel plan then meet again at the final EU exit.

The quick answer Ask for tax-free paperwork before paying. The goods must cost at least SEK 200 including VAT, remain unused and non-commercial, and leave the EU before the end of the third month after the purchase month. If Sweden is your final EU country, present the item, tax-free receipt, shop receipt, passport and travel documents for validation before the goods become inaccessible in checked baggage.

Residence decides eligibility, not the language in the passport

The relevant test is where you live. A person registered within the EU cannot use the tourist refund simply because they hold a non-EU passport, while an eligible resident outside the EU can. The separate rule for someone moving from Sweden requires an intended stay outside the EU of at least twelve months.

SEK 200 is the shop-door threshold

The goods must have a value of at least SEK 200 including VAT. The merchant also needs to be affiliated with a tax-free arrangement and issue the correct receipt at purchase. Ask before the card is charged; staff cannot always rebuild an export document after you leave.

Your last EU country owns the export moment

If the journey ends with a direct flight from Stockholm to a non-EU country, Sweden is the final EU exit. If you connect through another EU airport before leaving the Union, follow the export-validation process at that final EU point and allow enough connection time. Ask the tax-free operator how the paperwork should travel through the itinerary.

At a Swedish exit, partner and Customs have different desks

Swedish Customs says tax-free partners normally stamp Swedish and Danish tax-free receipts, while Customs handles receipts from other EU countries; if the partner is closed, Customs can validate. Arlanda and Landvetter have specified arrangements, and another airport, ferry port or land border should be checked in advance.

Do not send the evidence down the baggage belt

Inspection requires the purchased item. Keep it unused, identifiable and accessible with the original documents until validation is complete. For a checked suitcase, find the export desk before ordinary bag drop rather than discovering that the coat or design object is already airside.

The refund is smaller than the headline VAT

A tax-free partner may deduct administration or service charges, so the amount returned is usually below the VAT printed on the receipt. Decide whether the refund justifies the queue and paperwork, particularly for a purchase only slightly above SEK 200.
