The rand wallet received a careful redesign in 2023 without changing its familiar value ladder. The upgraded notes still run from R10 to R200 and still use Mandela and the Big Five, while the entirely new coin series turns six small denominations into a tour of South African ecology.
Paper money
South African rand notes share Nelson Mandela on the front and the Big Five on the reverse, creating one of travel's easiest wildlife money lessons.
South Africa's rand notes pair Nelson Mandela with the Big Five; the latest family-themed designs show rhinoceros, elephant, lion, buffalo and leopard with their young. Cash by Country artwork is an original, simplified interpretation and is not legal tender.
Match five colours to five animal families
The whole everyday ladder fits in one line
The animals grew from individuals into families
Earlier Mandela-series notes showed a single Big Five animal on each reverse. The 2023 upgrade keeps the species-value relationship but depicts a family, giving the back of the note a more social story while Mandela remains the common visual anchor on the front.
Six coins make a pocket nature trail
The fourth decimal series uses a Cape honey bee on 10c, bitter aloe on 20c, Knysna turaco on 50c, king protea on R1, springbok on R2 and southern right whale on the bimetal R5. The theme is “deep ecology”: people and nature understood as one connected environment.
The edges are designed to speak by touch
Each 2023 coin has its own landing pattern and number of sides or edge cues to help distinguish value, including for people with visual impairments. The R5 remains the easiest metal clue: a bimetal coin where silver and warmer alloy meet.
Eleven official languages rotate through the coin series
The coin inscriptions do not attempt to place every official language on every piece. SARB rotates the language combinations over time: one language appears on R1, three on R5 and two on the other denominations. Two genuine coins of the same value can therefore carry different language pairings.
Old and upgraded money can share one till
SARB says the upgraded notes and fourth decimal coins co-circulate with the previous series at the same value. Check several security features and the overall note, rather than rejecting cash because a portrait, animal family or tactile feature differs from the newest example.
