Money in the Philippines

Meet a peso wallet where national heroes share space with eagles, deer and coral reefs, then learn when a QR code works, why cash should board the ferry with you and what a service charge means at dinner.

The Philippines can move from contactless malls to cash-only island roads in a single travel day, while two generations of colourful peso notes share the same wallet.

The quick answer

Should you carry cash in the Philippines?

Use a low-fee Visa or Mastercard in cities, keep a separate backup and build a small-note PHP reserve before leaving a major town. Choose pesos on payment screens, check whether a QR sign works with your actual app, and never assume the next island ATM will be online or stocked.

There is no single Philippine payment rule. A Manila mall, a Cebu jeepney, a Palawan boat operator and a Siargao cafe can each ask for a different part of the wallet. The useful plan is layered: card for formal merchants, QR only when your visitor setup genuinely qualifies, and 20-, 50- and 100-peso cash for the everyday gaps.

Let the material date the notePaper portraits and new wildlife-themed polymer notes are both valid. The colour still helps, but the material tells you which series is in your hand.
Let the logo define the QRQR Ph is interoperable between participating Philippine apps. A visible QR code does not automatically mean every foreign bank or phone wallet can scan it.
Let the next stop set the reserveWithdraw in the city for islands, divide the cash between bags and turn one large note into practical change before the first tricycle or boat fare.
