Pack spendable rupiah

How Much Cash Should You Carry?

Do not carry the whole holiday budget in a humid wallet. Carry enough rupiah for the next independent leg, then replenish deliberately where the ATMs are dependable.

Indonesia Travel specifically recommends having small change when visiting remote areas and traditional markets. The right reserve therefore depends less on the country name and more on your next transport connection, island, market day and reliable ATM.

A practical starting reserve For a card-first city visitor, Rp500,000 to Rp1,000,000 is a useful opening range rather than a daily budget. Increase it before remote, island or cash-heavy days, then reduce it again when reliable access returns.

Build cash from jobs, not nerves

Everyday cash layerFood stalls, markets, local rides and small purchases need spendable notes.
Travel-day layerAdd enough for transfers, snacks and a delay before the next known ATM.
Remote-route multiplierCarry more before smaller islands or places where card terminals and ATMs are not a given.
Card-failure bufferCover one useful meal, ride or overnight problem rather than the rest of the trip.

Three wallet shapes

Trip patternStarting ideaWhat changes it
Jakarta or Bali, card-firstRp500,000Markets, group size and first-day transport
Mixed city and local travelRp750,000 to Rp1,000,000Traditional-market plans and distance to ATMs
Island or remote legRoute-based buffer above thatLength of stay, boat connections and known cash access

These are starting points, not spending targets. Accommodation, major tours and large shopping are best kept in the card-and-budget plan rather than automatically loaded into the cash pocket.

Make the reserve spendablePrioritise Rp10,000, Rp20,000 and Rp50,000 notes. Keep one or two Rp100,000 notes separately, but do not let them become the whole wallet.

Replenish before the map gets sparse

Use an ATM in a major destination, bank or established commercial area before you travel outward. Avoid treating the final ATM before a ferry or mountain road as the only plan; it may be offline, empty or unsuitable for your network.

Know the declaration line

Indonesia's electronic customs declaration is mandatory for arriving travelers. The current customs guidance also highlights a Rp100 million equivalent threshold for certain cash declarations, including outbound travel. Check the official declaration system for the exact direction and current rule before carrying a large amount.
