Money in India
Meet the rupee before the first market, monument ticket and chai stop. India combines major-city card terminals with a daily QR-code economy where a small cash reserve still makes travel simpler.
Cash carries the smallest moments. Cards cover the big ones. A visitor UPI wallet can unlock the QR-code layer.
Should you carry cash in India?
Build a three-part India wallet: a card for larger purchases, spendable rupees for everyday moments, and UPI only after you have set up a visitor-approved prepaid wallet.
India's Unified Payments Interface is woven deeply into day-to-day commerce, but a foreign card does not automatically scan a UPI code. Cash remains the universal fallback, particularly for smaller sellers and moments where payment setup should not become the adventure.
Paper money
Indian rupee notes form a bright Gandhi series, pairing large values with landmarks and regional stories that make the denomination ladder easy to learn.
India's Mahatma Gandhi New Series places Gandhi on the front and turns the reverses into a route through national heritage, from the Konark wheel and Ellora to Hampi and the Red Fort. Cash by Country artwork is an original, simplified interpretation and is not legal tender.

Indian money works across three layers: the notes in your pocket, the card at a larger counter and the UPI QR on a small merchant's stand. Learn each one, then tip without turning every bill into a fixed percentage.
