Money in Iceland

Meet the five portraits in Iceland's paper wallet, tip a pocket ocean of coins onto the table and learn the small rules behind card screens, capital-area buses, tax-free receipts and tips.

Iceland puts five cultural stories above a pocket ocean, lets one bus card remember transfers and caps, and turns a 12,000-króna receipt into an airport task.

The quick answer

Should you carry cash in Iceland?

Use a low-fee contactless card for most spending, carry a separate backup and keep a modest króna reserve for the gaps. Choose ISK on every terminal, use the same payment object for every capital-area bus tap and keep tax-free paperwork accessible before airport check-in.

Iceland is wonderfully card-friendly without becoming a foreign-currency destination. Euros and dollars are rarely the useful answer, the 2,000-króna note is valid but seldom seen, one Strætó card can earn transfers and fare caps, and a routine tip is not expected.

Keep the price IcelandicSelect ISK rather than a familiar home-currency conversion at the terminal or ATM, then let your own provider convert the charge.
Keep one bus payment objectA plastic card and its phone-wallet version count as different fare media, so use the same one for transfers and daily or weekly capping.
Keep the receipt with the goodsTax-free shopping starts with one qualifying receipt and ends before airport check-in, when the form may need validation beside the actual purchase.

Iceland travel money guides

Iceland's money story is larger than a card terminal. Its notes form a compact cultural gallery, its coins carry the sea, the Reykjavík bus remembers the card you used, qualifying shopping receipts have an airport ending and the displayed price already carries the service.
