Piraeus is the best-known gateway, but routes may also leave from Rafina or Lavrio. The cheapest-looking ferry becomes expensive if the taxi is heading to the wrong coast. Match the port name, vessel and operator message before leaving the city.

Wind and operational changes can delay or cancel sailings. Keep accommodation and onward transfers flexible where possible, retain receipts and avoid building a non-refundable chain immediately after a weather-sensitive crossing.

KTEL is a network, not one national wallet
Regional KTEL operators organise many intercity and island bus services. Ticket channels and card acceptance can differ by destination. Check the local operator rather than assuming an Athens transit card or bank-card tap will work on arrival.
Small notes buy time at the edges
EUR 5, 10 and 20 notes help with a short taxi, local bus window, bakery, beach stop or a card terminal that has lost its connection. Keep the reserve compact and replenish it before a smaller island rather than searching for an ATM after disembarking.
