Ten percent, when deserved

Tipping in Bulgaria

The currency changed in 2026. The social signal did not: a modest extra for good service is welcome, voluntary and best handled after checking the bill.

Tipping in Bulgaria is voluntary, but an extra for good service is familiar in restaurants, taxis, hotels and guided experiences. Visit Sofia describes 10% as an appropriate amount for waiters and taxi drivers. Treat that as a useful upper rhythm, not a compulsory tax on every interaction.

The Bulgarian tipping rule Check for an included service charge, then leave around 10% for good table service. Round up smaller cafe or taxi totals. No tip is required for poor service or a simple counter transaction.

Translate the old lev habit into euros

Older guidance often says to round up to the next whole lev. Since the euro is now legal tender, copying that sentence literally makes no sense. Use the intention instead: a small, convenient euro amount for routine help, or roughly 10% when the service genuinely earned it.

EUR 18.40 → 20EUR 46 → 50EUR 92 → 100

The examples show easy thank-you totals, not mandatory minimums.

Card tip or cash tip?

Ask before the terminal amount is finalized. Some venues can include a tip in the card total; others cannot or may distribute card gratuities differently. A small euro cash tip is direct and easy, particularly in an independent restaurant or after a taxi ride.

Do not tip in levLev stopped being legal tender on 1 February 2026. A nostalgic banknote is not a useful thank-you for someone who then has to exchange it.

Read the bill before doing percentage work

  • Confirm every ordered item and the currency.
  • Look for a service or cover charge before adding a tip.
  • During dual display through 8 August 2026, identify the euro total.
  • Calculate from the actual bill, not a converted home-currency notification.
  • Ask for clarification before paying if something is unfamiliar.

The phrase that matters more than perfect arithmetic

Blagodarya means thank you. Pairing a clear amount with a sincere thank-you avoids the awkwardness of leaving unexplained coins. Bulgaria's tipping culture is warm enough to appreciate the gesture and relaxed enough not to demand one when the service did not earn it.
